MEDIA ISSUE #1: Pakistan’s PM orders YouTube halt over anti-Islam film

Source: tribunnews.com

The conflict over an anti-Islam film made in the US continued to fuel protests and extreme reactions in the Muslim world. The film entitled ‘The innocence of Muslim’ which also went viral on social media (Youtube) had led the citizen of Pakistan in to a protest and demonstration as the film is trying to mortify one’s religion.

In my opinion, The Pakistan PM orders YouTube halt over anti-Islam film was for a reasonable action as YouTube should consider the aspects of cultural understanding between religion nationwide. Pakistan is a Muslim country where they are very sensitive and particular about their religion thus there should be a consideration taken in posting and filming about religion stories thoroughly and sensitively. It should be taken down out of respect due to the sensitivity of religion especially in a conservative country.

However, freedom of speech is also practice in America, Free speech laws in the United States allow the creation of films and other materials whether anti-Islamic, anti-Christian, or anti-American where they have the right to say, write or  publish things that could offend or provoke as it is a human right to do so. From my point of view, I would agree to a certain point that freedom of expression should not  be curtailed just because of religion sake. According to Igwe L:

“Many religious dogmas are insulting to human intelligence and common sense. And the way to address this is not to limit freedom of speech but to enhance it, to promote and protect free and unfettered expressions both religious and secular. The solution is not less free speech, but more”

                                                                                                                                                        (2012)

Freedom of expression is right and should not be bowdlerized, nevertheless respecting  each others religion is important in order to establish the unity of religion and country.
